About two years ago, I learned that not every investment offer is an opportunity.
I got a strange email from a man who said he wanted to invest in my company. Something about it felt off, so I called to confirm he’d actually sent it. He hadn’t—he was being impersonated and said he was working with the FBI. But then he asked, “Now that I’ve got you, what are you building?”
We talked. On the surface, he was polished and kind. Underneath, the energy was wrong. When I finally met him, curiosity got the best of me and I asked how he made his fortune.
He smiled and said something about “pain management clinics.”
That’s when I realized—people like this speak in code. When they don’t want you to know what they’ve really done, they hide behind clever language. You have to read between the lines. What he was really saying was: pill mills.
He told the story like it was a smart business move—buying control of companies, pushing founders out, profiting from addiction.
I heard it as a confession.
That moment never left me. Because it made one truth impossible to ignore:
Where your money comes from matters.
In the world of venture and private equity, capital is treated like water—neutral, interchangeable, nothing personal. But energy is never neutral. Money holds the imprint of the people who made it. If it was built on depletion, it will keep depleting. If it was created with integrity, it will expand creation.
And here’s what I finally understood: the only thing that truly differentiates money is the person it’s attached to.
You—founder or investor—are the energy. You are the differentiator.
So if I have a choice of ten investors, I’ll choose the one whose frequency matches mine. The one whose motives feel clean. Because the moment that money touches you, its story becomes part of yours.
We’re entering an era where this will matter more than valuation, more than growth rates, more than exit multiples. People are waking up to the truth that character is capital.
When that shift fully lands, it’s going to look like a revolution. But to those of us building in the margins, it will just feel like alignment finally finding its market.
